The daughter of Claude and Kingston Rose won the 1981 Champagne Stakes at Randwick.
The following season her major wins included the G1 VRC Oaks, G1 Australasian Oaks and the G1 AJC Australian Derby when she became the first filly to win the classic since 1944.
Rose of Kingston was voted Australia’s champion racehorse in her three-year-old season of 1981-82.
At four, she won the G2 Craiglee Stakes and the G3 Coongy Handicap before her retirement to Kingston Park Stud at Merricks North.
On her retirement she was sent to the US where she produced five foals between 1984 and 1992 by champion sires Green Dander (Kingston Dancer); Secretariat (Kingston Rule); Alydar (Aly Kingston); Nureyev (Kingsttenham) and Seattle Slew (Rose of Portland).
Kingston Rule was by far the most successful on the track, being imported to Australia for his racing career where he won the 1990 Melbourne Cup in record time.
Rose of Kingston came home to Australia in 1993 with her first Kingston Park-bred progeny in 1994 being Portland Player. The Marscay colt went on to win the Victorian Derby and is now forging a successful stud career.
Rose of Kingston was retired from breeding in 2000 and spent her final years at Kingston Park, sharing a paddock with her half sister Spirit of Kingston, winner of the 1984 VRC Oaks and 1985 Canterbury and Rosehill Guineas. Rose of Kingston died at Kingston Park Stud at the age of 23 in June 2002.
